LINE Of Duty fans were left shocked as they discovered that H is not one person but a group of four bent people working within the police force.

In a huge and unexpected twist during tonight’s nail-biting finale we learnt that cop lawyer Gill Biggeloe had been working alongside Dot Cottan and ACC Hilton (who were brought down in previous series) but the fourth member is still unknown.

In dramatic scenes viewers discovered that Gill (Polly Walker) had been the one to frame anti-corruption unit AC-12’s boss, Supt. Ted Hastings (Adrian Dunbar), who spent most of the episode frantically trying to clear his name.

It emerges that Gill Biggeloe had in fact picked John Corbett to go undercover and had told him that Ted was the policeman working closely with his mum before she was brutally murdered – knowing full well that Corbett would do everything in his power to bring Ted down.

John – who got his throat slit earlier on the series – believed Ted was ‘H’ because of Gill’s information but he had died in vain searching for the wrong person.

Those watching at home couldn’t believe what they were watching and took to Twitter to comment on it.

One person wrote: “Omg what the hell is going on!! They have ended it like that #LineOfDuty.”

Another added: “Waaaaw that was too much for my head to handle hahaha  #LineOfDuty.”

While someone else remarked: “What a finale! #lineofduty Mesmerising, brilliant acting. What a shocker.”

Much of the episode saw an unshaven, unkempt Ted in prison clothing being grilled by his nemesis, DCS Patricia Carmichael, played by Anna Maxwell Martin.

It’s only in the last thirty minutes that DS Steve Arnott (Martin Compston) and DC Kate Flemming (Vicky McClure) crack the case and discover that they have been looking for more than one person all along.

In a stroke of genius Arnott works out that footage of a dying Dot showed him doing morse code to indicate that there are four people already involved.

As the truth comes out about Gill, she attempts to contact the OCG on her burner phone but no one comes to her rescue and she is arrested.

But towards the very end of the episode it’s clear the fourth bent copper is still in action as in a shock scene another copper, who had been working with Carmichael, takes Gill to the loo.

As Gill emerges from the cubicle the copper whips out a knife and tries to kill Gill - but the blade goes through her hand.

Arnott storms the toilet and shoots the bent copper who had clearly been given orders to silence Gill after she was arrested.

But how did she get the orders so quickly? Does it mean that someone else in the building is working for the OCG?

During Ted’s intense interrogation we also learn more about his connection to Northern Ireland and John Corbett.

It turned out he was close to John’s mum when she was working as informant and there was a suggestion they had an affair.

Ted had been the last person to see Anne Marie alive but he had no idea that she was John’s mum.

When he learns the truth, he breaks down in tears – leaving fans wondering whether he could in fact be John’s father.

Series five ends as Ted is cleared of everything but is given his last written warning before going back to running AC12 - which continues to function.
