When and how did Princess Diana die?

Princess Diana died on August 31 1997, after suffering fatal injures in a car crash in the Pont de l’Alma road tunnel in Paris.

This year marks the 20th anniversary of her death, with many events being held in her memory.

Her companion Dodi Fayed and driver and security guard Henri Paul were also killed in the crash.

Her bodyguard Trevor Rees-Jones survived with horrific injuries.

In the days following her death a sea of flowers and tributes were left outside the gates of Kensington Palace in an enormous outpouring of public grief.

Her funeral was held on September 6 1997 at Westminster Abbey and was shown on British television, attracting an audience of 32.1million viewers.

An inquest held in London concluded in 2008 that the Princess had been unlawfully killed, blaming the crash on grossly negligent driving by Paul and the pursuing paparazzi.

What is Diana, 7 days? Will Prince William and Prince Harry feature?

This new BBC documentary we take a look at one of the most iconic weeks in history - the days that followed the death of Princess Diana.

Viewers will hear for the first time from those closest to her.

The show will feature interviews with Diana’s sons, Prince William and Prince Harry and her siblings, Lady Sarah McCorquodale and Earl Spencer, plus former Prime Minister Tony Blair.

It will ask questions like - what was it about Diana that explained such an outpouring of grief? What did that week reveal about the British public’s relationship with the monarchy, then and now? And how - if at all - has Britain changed in the aftermath?

It will then look into the seven days that followed, and the nation's grief
