The new Netflix film provides an insight into life for the first and only US Women's Army Corps unit of color during World War II and features both Kerry Washington and Oprah Winfrey.

What is The Six Triple Eight about?
In February 1945, over 850 women in the 6888th Central Postal Directory were deployed to Europe.
The 6888th Central Postal Directory was the first and only Women's Army Corps unit of color to be stationed in Europe at this time.
During the film, viewers will follow the true story of 855 women who played a pivotal role in ensuring that their fellow troops received mail from their loved ones back home.
The 6888th Central Postal Directory was given just six months to sort through more than 17 million pieces of mail that were often incomplete or had been mislabeled.
In addition to the almost impossible task at hand, the battalion was also placed ''in segregated housing and relegated to poorly maintained buildings often lacking light and heat.''
Despite the conditions and fear they were faced with, the 6888th Central Postal Directory took just 90 days to bring the post to the front lines.
Discussing the new Netflix film, writer and director Tyler Perry explained how he was inspired to bring the true story to screens after meeting a former member of the battalion, Lena Derriecott King, who passed away at the age of 100, in January 2024.
In a tribute to Lena Derriecott King, Tyler said: ''We sat in her house for a couple of hours just talking, having a great conversation.

Prior to her passing, Tyler was able to show King an incomplete version of the film.
The completed version will launch on screens later this month.

Oprah Winfrey stars in the Netflix World War II drama Six Triple Eight.
In the much anticipated film, Oprah plays a member of the only all-black battalion who is tasked with sorting through and delivering a three-year backlog of undelivered mail.

The talk show host is best known for The Oprah Winfrey Show, as well as her CBS interview with Prince Harry and Meghan Markle.
"The Queen of Media" has also starred in other films including, The Colour Purple (1985) and A Wrinkle In Time (2018), making her perfect for this role.

Kerry Washington plays a leading role in the new Tyler Perry film.
The Emmy Award winning actress portrays the screen adaptation of Major Charity Adams, who was the first African American woman officer in the Women's Army Corps.

The Six Triple Eight will be available to watch on Netflix from December 20, 2024.
It will also be shown in select theaters from December 6, 2024.
Sharing a glimpse into the casting process, producer Nicole Avant explained how Kerry Washington landed the role of Major Charity Adams.

''She respects and honors women of color in history and always wants to celebrate the story of an underdog.''
Alongside Kerry Washington, The Six Triple Eight cast also features stars such as Oprah Winfrey, Ebony Obsidian, Milauna Jackson, Gregg Sulkin, and Sam Waterston.
