"Two new tiers of X Premium subscriptions launching soon," the tweet read.

"One is lower cost with all features, but no reduction in ads," Musk explained.

"And the other is more expensive, but has no ads," he added.

Premium web plans currently start at around $8 per month, or $84 a year.

This plan shows about 50 percent fewer ads.

Meanwhile, premium in-app on iOS or Android starts at $11 per month or $114.99 per year.

"Subscriptions are a way for people’s most engaged followers to help them earn money from X for their contributions on the platform," X explains on its webpage.

"When someone has a Subscription offering, their followers can sign up to access bonus posts created especially for them."

Premium subscriptions offer a number of features that basic X plans don't.

Most notably, active Premium subscription users get a blue checkmark on their account.

Another coveted feature of the Premium plan is the ability to edit your tweets up to one hour after sharing.

They also get offered early access to select new features before they are rolled out.

Social media users have mixed reactions to Musk's tweet on early Friday morning.

"It's slowly becoming a pay-to-speak platform," one user said.

"Add a third tier that guarantees no shadow banning or hidden censorship that causes views to be limited," a second person commented.

"This tier would allow unfettered, unlimited viewership. I would pay extra for that," they continued.

"I will pay the maximum amount possible to help this great website succeed," another person remarked.

Musk purchased Twitter in November of 2022 after an arduous legal battle with the company's then-board of executives.

Earlier this year, the billionaire rebranded the platform as X and revealed plans to create a super app in the future.

The concept of a super app first originated with WeChat, a popular Chinese platform.
