After complaining of pain in his leg earlier this week, Robson will have further tests over the weekend.

An RFU spokesman said: “Dan Robson suffered blood clots, which arose spontaneously earlier this week and is being evaluated and treated by specialists at the moment.

"At this stage it is too early to give a return-to-play date.”

The 27-year-old has been capped twice this Six Nations and was due to be on the bench against Scotland today.

Robson is likely to be out for months and with the World Cup starting in September, it is a huge blow for a player who had worked tirelessly to feature in Eddie Jones' plans.

When the Wasps star left the England camp on Tuesday they initially put it down to "illness".

Assistant boss Steve Borthwick later said: “He’s got some investigations and consultations going on.

“We’re trying to investigate exactly what it is.”
