And despite a downpour soaking the Carnoustie course yesterday, fans were quick to pick up on the contrast between Cink's pale bald head and tanned neck.

One bemused viewer wrote on Twitter: "Does Stewart Cink have the worst hat tan in all of golf? In human history?"

Another posted: "Stewart Cink has the best tan line in sports. I live for his hat removal."

A fellow user wrote: "Stewart Cink's bald head tan line, a summer tradition unlike any other."

One said: "Stewart Cink has the tan line of an angel."

Another posted: "Stewart Cink's hat tan was a thing of beauty."

Cink's eye-catching look first went viral some four years ago.

It beggars belief that he has not tried to remedy it since then - and he says it is a battle he constantly fights.

Asked if he knew his head was an online sensation, he said: "Like, wow. My head looked like it was glowing. I can’t help it. I fight the battle of bad tan line. I don’t know what else to do.

"If it was somebody else, I probably would have tweeted about it, too, because it caught my attention and it was funny.

"And it’s harmless. It’s just an easy thing to sort of laugh at and poke fun at. It’s fine with me. I know it looks silly. But it’s enough of a battle for me."
