CHARLIE ADAM'S missed penalty in stoppage time means Stoke remain in the bottom three with hopes of Premier League survival looking bleak.
The Scottish midfielder, 32, had a chance to give the Potters all three points but could not make it count.
Brighton had the better of the chances in the game at the Bet365 Stadium and made their opponents pay with a great move to open the scoring.
Jose Izquierdo picked up the ball from deep and after exchanging passes in a slick rhythm with two team mates, put it past Jack Butland.
That came after the Colombian winger's cracker against West Ham last week to take his tally to three league goals.
Then the drama began as Xherdan Shaqiri's goal made it 1-1, the Swiss midfielder picked up the ball on the edge of the box and curled a delightful low strike into the far corner.
In the final minutes Stoke were awarded a penalty for a foul on Jese, and substitute Charlie Adam stepped up after refusing to allow the Spaniard to take the spot-kick.
Unfortunately his his effort saved by Mat Ryan and then cleared by Lewis Dunk.
The Potters faithful were up, but Brighton stayed defiant, with another shot coming in from Stoke which Anthony Knockaert cleared off the line with his head.
After the match, penalty hero Mat Ryan said: "It looked like a pretty soft penalty - but I was fortunate to pick the right way and keep it out - and straight after that Lewis Dunk making that tackle and then Anthony Knockaert blocking on the line - it just shows how much character there is in this team.
"It's vital to take points off teams around us in the league and we did that today, but we have to be more ruthless. We're on a decent run at the moment, with two home games next up, so hopefully we can get two home wins."
