Liverpool parade crash latest: Jürgen Klopp breaks silence on horror which left 4 people ‘very, very ill

JÜRGEN Klopp has broken his silence in a heartfelt post following the horror crash that has left four people “very, very ill.”

The former Liverpool manager took to Instagram to express his devastation over the horror crash that injured 47 people during Liverpool FC’s victory parade.

The post read: "My family and I are shocked and devastated.

"Our thoughts and prayers are with all those who are injured and affected.

"You'll never walk alone."

Steve Rotheram, Liverpool City Region Metro Mayor, revealed that four people in hospital are currently "very ill" following the horror crash.

He told BBC Radio 5 Live: "We are hoping, of course, that they pull through."

The mayor was then asked if the update indicated an increase in the number of people seriously injured.

He replied: "No, not directly, but of course we’re in liaison with the police and the ambulance services.”

    Football clubs across the UK have offered their condolences and support to Liverpool, following the incident.

    Liverpool FC said it is in direct contact with Merseyside Police and extended its thoughts and prayers to those affected.

    Local rivals, Everton, said: "Our thoughts are with all those who have been affected by this serious incident in our city."

    "Our thoughts are with Liverpool FC and the city of Liverpool after today's awful incident," a post from Manchester United read.

    Former captain and Liverpool legend, Steven Gerrard, posted a picture of the city with a red heart on Instagram.

    While ex-Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher wrote on X: "Devastating end to the day... just pray everyone is ok."

  • Victim thrown 20ft in air by car, according to witness

    One witness to the horrific scenes claims the first person that was hit by the car was thrown "about 20ft" in the air.

    Les Winsper, 55, told The Guardian how people attempted to smash the car's window, which led to the driver panicking and putting "his foot down".

    He added: "He then hit someone and that person has gone in the air and he's ploughed through the rest of them. I’ve never seen anything like it."

  • Prime Minister says 'the whole country stands with Liverpool'

    Sir Keir Starmer told broadcasters his thoughts are with the community following the horror crash, which left 47 injured and four people “very, very ill” in hospital.

    The Prime Minister said: "Liverpool stands together and the whole country stands with them."

    He then went on to thank the emergency services, "who did a fantastic job last night and continue to do so".

    Starmer revealed he is "being updated frequently" on the police's investigation and has kept in touch with Liverpool City Region Mayor Steve Rotheram.

    Chloe Firth, a Liverpool resident, had to make her way to work passing the police cordon on Castle Street.

    She admitted they’re "a bit inconvenient," but added, "a bit of inconvenience to make sure people are held accountable for their actions is fine".

    Speaking on yesterday's crash, which left 47 injured, she said: "You don’t expect to see that happen, do you?

    "It was just horrendous after such a good weekend for Liverpool."

  • Eyewitnesses say people hit car window moments before it ploughed into crowd

    Harry Rashid was with his wife and three daughters on Water Street when the chaos broke out.

    The dad of three recalled people hitting the car’s window, with some briefly managing to pry the door open before it ploughed into the crowd.

    He said there were several people injured on the ground while others were screaming.

    Harry told BBC Radio 4's Today programme: "We were surrounded by a sea of people just confused and panicking."

  • 'Just heard screams and it was bedlam'

    Gavin Young, 46, attended the parade with his girlfriend, who was "just 4ft away from the car ploughing into people".

    The Liverpool fan from south Wales told the BBC: "We came here to have fun. We'd been out all day partying and having fun.

    "I [saw] the car and just heard screams and it was bedlam."

    Gavin recalled how happy everyone had been, but said: "Then for someone to do that and turn it on its head is unbelievable."

  • Liverpool MP ‘absolutely heartbroken’

    Liverpool West Derby MP Ian Byrne says he is “absolutely heartbroken” by the car ramming incident that marred what should have been a day of celebration.

    In a statement posted on X, he wrote: “Absolutely heartbroken by the scenes in town, after what should have been the best of days. My love and thoughts are with all affected.”

    Liverpool FC’s historic rivals, Manchester United, also showed their support.

    “Our thoughts are with @LFC, and the city of Liverpool after today’s awful incident,” the team posted on X on Monday.

  • Narrow escape for one witness

    Chelsea Yuen was walking with her friend Francesca and her young daughter, Isabella, and only just managed to get out of the way.

    She said: "It was jam packed, we were like sardines walking up the street, then we heard beeping and screaming.

    “As we looked up, there was a black people carrier driving straight towards us, and me and my friend jumped out of the way and pulled her little girl away.

    "It must have been going about 30mph and as it went past we could see all the windows all smashed in with people chasing down the car.

    "Then as we were walking up there were police riot vans at the top of the road. All of a sudden the police and ambulances were coming from everywhere.

    “I can't fathom what would make someone do that, given the amount of children there. It's really scary."

    Chelsea said they’d have been hit if the car hadn’t been beeping.

  • Car 'suddenly accelerated forwards'

    Dan Ogunshakin, a BBC reporter who was off-duty, was in Liverpool for the celebration and saw part of the chaos.

    He said: "The mood was one of celebration, of happiness, of joy and then all of a sudden we noticed an ambulance was moving down the crowd and I said to my friend: 'I wonder if someone had fallen ill,' as obviously the ambulance is attending to someone."

    Dan said he saw a grey car in front of the ambulance and "suddenly a lot of people started to surround it".

    The car reversed and knocked people away from it, and then it "suddenly accelerated forwards" into the crowd.

  • Victim speaks from hospital

    A man from Northern Ireland was being treated in hospital on Monday night after being struck by the car and spoke about the terrifying ordeal.

    Jack Trotter, from Newtownards, County Down, and his girlfriend Abbie Gallagher were both struck by the rampaging vehicle.

    He told BBC NI that he was in "absolute agony".

    The couple had travelled to the parade with a group of other friends from Northern Ireland.

  • Not a terror attack - full context

    Jenny Sims of Merseyside Police said during Monday night's press conference that the incident was not being treated as a terror attack.

    Here's that important part of her statement in full:

    "The car stopped at the scene and a 53-year-old white, British man from the Liverpool area was arrested. We believe him to be the driver of the vehicle.

    “Extensive inquiries are ongoing to establish the circumstances leading up to the collision, and it is vital that people do not speculate or spread misinformation on social media.

    “I know that people will understandably be concerned by what has happened tonight.

    “What I can tell you is that we believe this to be an isolated incident, and we are not currently looking for anyone else in relation to it.

    “The incident is not being treated as terrorism.”

  • Victims taken to four hospitals

    Dave Kitchen from the North West Ambulance Service said that the injured people were rushed to four different hospitals.

    They were: the Royal Liverpool Hospital, Alder hey, Arrow Park and Aintree University hospitals.

    As a reminder - 27 people were taken to hospital, a further 20 were treated at the scene, two people including a child had serious injuries, and four children were injured in total.

    A large inflatable blue tent remained standing on water street after the sun had gone down and the press conference had finished.

    The area, strewn with litter, remained cordoned off, and there was still a significant police presence.

  • Starmer: 'Whole country stands with Liverpool'

    Prime Minister Keir Starmer spoke out again on Monday evening to reaffirm his support for the people of Liverpool.

    He said he had spoke with the city's mayor, Steve Rotheram.

    Starmer praised the city's emergency teams for "supporting and caring for those injured in these terrible events".

    He continued: "Everyone, especially children, should be able to celebrate their heroes without this horror.

    "The city has a long and proud history of coming together through difficult times.

    "Liverpool stands together and the whole country stands with Liverpool."

  • 'Heartbreaking news' - Reds legend Robbie Fowler

    Liverpool FC legend Robbie Fowler said he is "sickened" by the events in his home town tonight.

    Taking to social media, he wrote: "Heartbreaking news [...] absolutely sickened with what's happened here in Liverpool."

    Fowler played for Liverpool as a striker between 1993 and 2001, and again in 2006-2007.

    He is the ninth-highest goalscorer in Premier League history and was a fan favourite at the club.

  • Manchester Arena bombing survivor hit by car

    A survivor of the Manchester Arena bombing was one of those knocked to the floor by the car.

    Frankie, 24, said: "I was at the Manchester Arena incident. I don't want to go out again," reports the Mail.

    They continued: "The side of the car went into me and I fell to the floor. It's all a blur.

    "I've got cuts and bruises and I'll be fine but there's loads who have got more severe injuries."

  • Council leader appeals to Liverpool's spirit

    Liam Robinson, leader of Liverpool City Council, said: “It has cast a very dark shadow over what had been a joyous day for the city and the finale to a fabulous bank holiday weekend.

    “Liverpool is a city that has a proud history of coming together and supporting each other during challenging times

    “I’ve no doubt that will again be the case over the coming days and weeks.”

  • Fire service: four trapped under wheels

    Liverpool's chief fire officer said the force received the first calls at 6:07pm and were on the scene within four minutes.

    Crews arrived to find four people trapped under the car.

    Fire officers managed to lift the vehicle and removed three adults and one child from beneath the wheels.

  • Ambulance: 27 taken to hospital, four children injured

    A spokesperson for the ambulance service said that 27 patients were taken by ambulance to hospital, and a further 20 were treated at the scene.

    Of those taken to hospital, two have sustained "serious injuries" - one of whom is a child.

    A paramedic was one of those struck by the car but is not in a serious condition.

    A police spokesperson said "a number of people have been injured and were taken to hospital".

    They confirmed that a 53-year-old white British man from Liverpool was arrested at the scene, and that he is believed to be the driver of the vehicle.

    The force added that this is believed to be an isolated incident, and is not being treated as terror-related.

    Police are not looking for anyone else in connection with the incident.
