‘Holy cow!’ – ELEVEN car pile-up at Monaco as carnage unfolds on track just hours ahead of Grand Prix

The incident occurred on the very first corner of the race

A SHOCKING 11-car pile-up caused chaos in Monaco this morning.

The incident occurred right at the start of this morning's F2 race, sparked by McLaren junior driver Alex Dunne colliding with Victor Martins.

The race on the famous streets of Monte-Carlo precedes the Monaco Grand Prix.

Dunne, 19, is the championship leader and began the race in P1.

The Irishman's poor start, however, immediately saw him overtaken by Martins.

As Dunne tried to go up the inside of the Frenchman's ART the pair collided - sending Martins into the barrier.

Dunne was subsequently hit by Richard Verschoor, although Leonardo Fornaroli was able to squeeze through to take the lead.

Following the chaos, which had one fan writing "Holy cow!" on social media, behind Fornaroli, the race was red flagged.

Dunne, Martins and Verschoor were all out of the race - as well as Gabriele Mini, Ritomo Miyata, Pepe Marti, Amaury Cordeel and Max Esterson.

The incident caused a lengthy delay as the area was tidied up - although thankfully no drivers were significantly hurt.

When action resumed, Fornaroli led for much of the race.

But there was to be a further twist, with the safety car required following Dino Beganovic's crash.

The timing worked perfectly for Jak Crawford to head straight for the pit lane - subsequently taking the lead.

American Crawford, 20, claimed victory, with Fornaroli coming second.

Initially third was British 17-year-old Arvid Lindblad - but he was docked five seconds for speeding in the pit.

This dropped Lindblad all the way down to ninth, with the final podium place taken by Sebastian Montoya.

Later today, Lewis Hamilton and Co will race around the same track for Formula 1's prestigious Monaco GP.

Lando Norris will begin on pole, with his team-mate Oscar Piastri in P3.
