  • Borthwick: 'They found a way to win'

Speaking to ITV after his side's win over Scotland, Steve Borthwick said: "Every game is important for England and you have to give Scotland credit, as they played a real smart game.

"They put pressure on you and as soon as they get a chance they move the ball wide quickly.

"This young group stayed in the fight and they kept composure and they kept running hard. They eventually found a way to win."

  • How the table looks

After England finally regained the Calcutta Cup, they also moved closer to Six Nations leaders Ireland.

The 16-15 triumph over Scotland has seen Red Rose end the day in second place with 10 points.

  • Darge: 'We need to deliver in the next two games'

Scotland co-captain Rory Darge spoke to BBC Scotland after the narrow loss to England, he said: "We scored more tries, but to be honest there were a lot of opportunities that we didn't make the most of.

"Part of that is England defended well, but we know we made enough opportunities to win that game, we maybe just didn't execute.

"It is tough. It was a big game in terms of the championship and obviously it's Scotland-England. We're gutted we couldn't get a win.

"There's no excuse for a drop-off now. We need to deliver in the next two games."

  • Itoje reacts

Speaking to ITV after England's Calcutta Cup triumph, Itoje said: "The performance was a bit mixed.

"Scotland played a lot in our half and we didn't exit the way we wanted but we did fight and scrap. There is loads for us to get better at but we are delighted to win.

"In the first half and the second half, we probably didn't play as much as we wanted and Scotland probably played more than us but we were more clinical than we have been.

"There is a feeling we are going to score so we just need to find ways of being there more and then we will execute more."

  • England finally get their hands on the prize

Having lost their last five games against Scotland, Itoje got to lift the Calcutta Cup in front of a home crowd.

It was the first time they had done so at Twickenham since 2017.

  • Grabbing victory from the jaws of defeat

This win meant so much to Steve Borthwick's side today.

They found a way to dig deep and despite not being the better team on the day, ground out victory.

England need to use this as a springboard for better things moving forward.

  • Scots only have themselves to blame

This defeat will hurt Scotland, it is a game they should have won.

In test rugby, you need to ensure you come away with points from your visits to the opponent's twenty-two and they failed to do so far too often.

Finn Russell missed all three of his kicks this evening and it proved to be so costly in the grand scheme of things.

  • FT: England 16-15 Scotland

England will lift the Calcutta Cup for the first time at Twickenham since 2017.

For a lot of this match, it seemed to be heading back north again.

To their credit, England defended well and prevented the visitors getting points on the board.

Then they applied the pressure and managed to find a way to win.

  • FT: England 16-15 Scotland

England have done it, the Calcutta Cup is theirs.

Forcing a standing maul, they walked Scotland into touch.

What an epic ending to the game and win for Borthwick's side.

  • England 16-15 Scotland

80+1. What a finish to this match.

England need to defend and get the ball dead.

The Scots need to get within range of trying to force a penalty to let them kick for the win.

  • England 16-15 Scotland

    79. Unbelievable scenes at Twickenham.

McDowall bursts through the middle and heads towards the line.

Scotland offload and work it out wide for van der Merwe to score.

Russell has a difficult conversion from the touchline, for the victory, but sends it wide of the uprights.

  • Try - Duhan van der Merwe (Scotland)

  • England 16-10 Scotland

    77. This is some last-ditch defending by England.

Fortunately for the hosts, they are making the tackles count.

It always looks like if the Scots can break the one challenge, they will be through to score.

A huge roar from the crowd as a loose pass for the visitors heads straight into touch.

  • England 16-10 Scotland

    75. Randall has the chance to clear for under pressure England.

He gets it all wrong as it is charged down and the Scots regain possession.

This match is really on a knife-edge right now.

  • England 16-10 Scotland

    73. Scotland work through the phases with a penalty in hand.

Like Wales earlier, they really didn't try anything different to take advantage.

Ireland on the other hand, threw caution to the wind in the same position and scored a superb try as the acrobatics of Lowe kept it in play.

    Different levels.

  • England 16-10 Scotland

    71. A massive score for Steve Borthwick's side.

With his parents looking on from the stands, Fin Smith sends his penalty over the posts from just inside the Scottish half.

That makes a big difference to the remainder of this test, Scotland need a try more than ever now.

  • Penalty - Fin Smith (England)

  • England 13-10 Scotland

    69. This is starting to go pear-shaped for the Scots.

They are leaking penalties and it is really hurting them.

As things stand, it looks like they are going to pay the ultimate price for their inability to turn pressure into points in the English twenty-two today.

  • England 13-10 Scotland

    67. England take the lead for the first time in the match.

Opting to go for the points on the board rather than pushing for the try.

More worryingly for Scotland, they are on a final warning for a yellow card which would make the final stages of this game that much more difficult.

  • Penalty - Marcus Smith (England)

  • England 10-10 Scotland

    65. England are knocking on the door so hard, it is almost falling off the hinges.

They are camped out in front of the Scottish posts right now.

Attacking with a penalty in hand, the referee opts to bring play back.

  • England 10-10 Scotland

    63. It is the visitors who are having to batten down the hatches now.

Ritchie does brilliantly to try and turnover and Scotland are awarded the penalty.

They did well preventing England from being able to release the ball.

  • England 10-10 Scotland

    61. England seem to be growing into this game more.

The fact that they are preventing the Scots from putting points on the board seem to be inspiring belief they can win this.

If the visitors come away from Twickenham with nothing to show for it, this will be a tough one to take.

  • England 10-10 Scotland

    59. Scotland are looking for an instant reply.

Not for the first time in this match, they are within touching distance of the English line.

They just seem to be struggling for that one moment of inspiration or quality to breach the hosts' defence.

  • England 10-10 Scotland

    57. This is the problem we outlined for the Scots.

Despite dominating the majority of this game, they now find themselves on level terms.

The next try in this match could really dictate the result although there is plenty of time remaining.
