And Foakes' charge into the stumps during India's innings just about summed up the tourists' performance.

Rohit Sharma had just run a single and the ball was returned to the wickets by Ollie Pope.

His throw was not the best and Foakes lost his bearings as he flew after it.

The wicketkeeper ran straight into the stumps, knocking them and himself to the floor.

Foakes dusted himself down and was seen giggling as team-mate Zak Crawley was also left in hysterics.

Fans found it just as funny, one said: "We’ve reached peak banter phase again, bring 'em home."

Another added: "In his defence, three large white pieces of wood sticking out the ground can be hard to spot."

A third joked: "Surely worth an appeal."

More reacted: "Ben Foakes falling over the stumps was probably the highlight today."

It perfectly summed up England's day.

They were all out for 246 as skipper Ben Stokes top scored with 70.

However, India flew out of the traps with opener Yashasvi Jaiswal racing to an unbeaten 76, terrorising England debutant Tom Hartley.

The hosts reached stumps on 119-1, trailing by 127 runs.
