A NUMBER of events will be held today to mark the first anniversary of the Grenfell Tower fire but whatever the event, supporters for the cause for justice have been united in wearing a green, heart-shaped badge.

The remains of the tower, as well as other prominent buildings, were also lit up to mark the first anniversary of the tragedy which was the most deadly domestic blaze since the Second World War.

Why do we wear green for Grenfell today?

The colour green has come to represent the plight of those who were killed in the blaze.

A number of buildings in London, and across the country, were lit up in green at 54 minutes past midnight on June 14, marking the first anniversary of the fire.

The time marked the first 999 call reporting the fire.

Grenfell Tower was lit up as was Kensington Palace, 12 other tower blocks near Grenfell and 10 Downing Street, as well as many others.

They remained green until 5am.

What is the Grenfell green heart badge?

The Green Heart for Grenfell badge was created as a way to remember those affected by the Grenfell tower tragedy.

It is meant to be a symbol of "hope, unity and love - and to remember those that were lost".

A number of prominent people have been spotted wearing the badges, including London mayor Sadiq Khan and Prime Minister Theresa May.

A charity T-shirt which costs £10 has also been produced with the underground symbol of a red circle and blue line replaced with a heart shape and Grenfell written on the blue line.

Jeremy Corbyn, Stormzy and Rita Ora have been seen wearing the tops designed Charlie Crockett and Kyle Devolle.

All the proceeds from the sale of the T-shirts will go to the families who were living in the tower.

Why has the colour been adopted?

The word Grenfell is an adaptation of the words "green field" resulting in the colour being chosen to mark the tower block inferno.

The area was once a green space before the sprawl of London took over.

There are many events taking place on the anniversary day of June 14.

A minute's silence will take place at 12pm.

The England squad will mark the event with a minute's silence before training today as they prepare for the World Cup in Russia and a vigil at the tower was held.

Around 2,000 people are expected to take part in a silent walk to St Mark's Park, the Kensington Memorial Park.
