In the story an evil creature stalks a New England town in a bid to hunt and eat children.

The beast first appears down a storm drain and primarily takes the form of a clown named Pennywise to attract the kids.

In the opening scene of the book a young boy is enticed to stick his arm down the drain to retrieve a paper boat he lost.

At this point the carnivorous clown rips off the little lad's arm, leaving him to bleed out in the street.

A new film version of the story is set for release in September this year.

This face was snapped in CCTV footage while Northern Irish Water were carrying out a survey of one of their sewers.

It was captured down a pipe underneath the Newtownbreda area of Belfast.

The light falling into the sewer in a certain way seems to have created the spooky apparition in the picture.

The company released the creepy image along with pictures of other things that have been lost down the sewers as it celebrated 10 years of operating in the province, reports.

In the past two years NI Water has spent more than £5million clearing blockages from the sewer system.

Along with the sinister face, teddy bears, mobile phones, bank cards and even baby seats and bicycles have been wrenched out of the sewers.
