DISNEYLAND's famous Twilight Zone Tower of Terror ride is set to close - to make way for a new attraction based on Marvel superheroes.

Thrillseekers have until January 2 to make their final 13-storey plunge on the "haunted elevators" inside the Hollywood Tower Hotel.

The iconic building at the California theme park will be turned into a new attraction celebrating the Guardians of the Galaxy film franchise.

The tower will become the Collector's Museum from which the Guardians, and visitors, must try to break out.

The new Disney attraction, expected to open next summer, will feature a free-fall sensation and various visual and audio effects.

Guardians of the Galaxy was one of the biggest box-office hits of 2014 and the sequel is due to hit movie screens in 2017.

Meanwhile the Tower of Terror ride, which opened in 2004, is being celebrated in a series of events before it closes.

Thrillseekers will have the chance to enjoy "Late Check-Out" rides after sunset in the run up to Halloween - with riders plunged into complete darkness for the first time.

Disney says it has no plans to close similar Tower of Terror rides at its theme parks in Florida, Tokyo and Paris.
