A DEATH row inmate escaped prison through the sewers after digging a tunnel from his cell - just like in the hit movie The Shawshank Redemption.
Chai Changpan broke out of Tangerang Prison, near Jakarta, Indonesia, through a 30-metre long tunnel he carved out using a screwdriver, chisel and crowbar.
The doomed drugs smuggler dug the tiny 50cm-wide passage after stealing the tools from the jail's kitchen workshop before eventually reaching the sewage system.
CCTV footage showed the desperate fugitive emerging from the pipe network and calmly walking away before disappearing into a dark alleyway.
Jakarta Police spokesman Yusri Yunus said it appears Changpan, 53, had been planning his incredible escape for around ''five to six months''.
The Chinese inmate reportedly timed his jail break to coincide with the changing of the guards.
His bid for freedom is being compared to that of Andy Dufresne who escaped from prison after spending years tunneling out of his cell in The Shawshank Redemption.
He finally escaped after crawling through 400 metres of sewage emerging into a river.
Changpan is now on Indonesia's most wanted list and immigration officers have put bans in place to stop him fleeing the country.
Cops said he was put on death row in 2017 after being found guilty of smuggling 110 kg of crystal methamphetamine into the country.
Officers also revealed this was not the first time that the convict has managed to escape detention.
While being held in a police cell during his trial he fled along with other prisoners by creating a hole in the bathroom using an iron bar.
They climbed a 2.5-metre wall outside but were recaptured after three days in a rented apartment in West Java.
Chief Yunus said an inmate confessed that Changpan had planned his latest breakout earlier this year.
He said: "We received information from his friend in prison that he first planned to escape months ago.

"We will find question him if he has any information on Changpan's whereabouts."
Jailbreaks are common in the country's prisons which are notoriously overcrowded and understaffed.
In 2018, dozens of inmates escaped a prison in Banda Aceh province by demolishing a fence during a religious.
