UK’s busiest motorway hit by string of closures for 48 HOURS this weekend sparking 30-min delays for 1,000s of drivers

Heavy traffic on a British motorway.

THE UK'S busiest motorway will be hit by a string of closures this weekend sparking delays for thousands of drivers.

Multiple diversions have been put in place by National Highways as drivers are warned to plan ahead.

Drivers will not be able to enter or exit the at Junction 10 from tonight until Monday morning.

All entry and exit roads on the Wisley Interchange, Surrey, will see a full weekend closure.

National Highways have said: "The Wisley Interchange junction 10, including all entry and exit slip roads, will be closed in its entirety from 9pm on Friday 16 May to 6am Monday 19 May 2025.

"While the A3 and M25 will both remain open, the slip roads off and on the junction won't be, meaning you won't be able to leave or join the M25 or the A3 AT junction 10."

As a result, traffic is expected on the M25 and surrounding areas with a number of diversion routes put in place.

These diversion routes are thought to be between nine and 12 miles long.

With light traffic, it is estimated each route should add between 20 and 30 minutes to drivers' journeys.

National Highways is enforcing the closure of Junction 10 slip roads for essential works.

This includes putting the finishing touches on the road surface for motorists.

The final resurfacing works on the gyratory is expected to be the last planned full weekend closure at the interchange.

Drivers have been warned to plan ahead and think about alternative routes they can take.

Alternative routes may include the M3, M23 or A24 to get onto the M25 from the south.

Alternatively, drivers can use the A316 and M3, A23 and A24 to get on the M25 from London or the north of Surrey.

A total of six diversions have been set out by National Highways to manage traffic.

Some of these will cut through the Byfleets, Old Woking, West Clandon and Leatherhead.

The M25 junction 10 and A3 Wisley Interchange is the busiest section of the M25, with over 300,000 vehicles travelling through it every day.

The ongoing works at junction 10 are due for completion in spring 2026.

This is to reduce congestion, create a smoother flow of traffic and provide safer journeys for thousands of drivers.

This has included several bridge demolitions and the building of new ones crossing the A3 and M25, connecting the four quadrants surrounding junction 10 for the first time.

Environmental improvements are also being made to the area including the restoration of heathland and planting of new trees and woodland.

M25 Junction 10 diversion routes

National Highways have provided six diversion routes ahead of the weekend closure of Junction 10 on the M25.

M25 travelling eastbound (towards Gatwick), to continue north or south on the A3:

If you're travelling eastbound on the M25 and want to leave the M25 and join the A3 to travel either north or south:

  • Leave the M25 at Junction 11
  • follow the A320 towards the six crossroads roundabout Junction with the A245  Woking, (Approximately 3.6 miles)
  • then pick up the A245 to Sheerwater, West Byfleet and Byfleet (Approximately 5.7 miles) to access the A3 north or south at the Painshill Junction. 

M25 travelling westbound (towards Heathrow), to continue north on the A3:

If you're travelling westbound on the M25 and want to leave the M25 and join the A3 to travel north:

  • Exit at junction 9 (Leatherhead) and follow the A243 towards Malden Rushett and Chessington (5.3 miles)
  • At the Hook Junction turn left onto the A309 Kingston Bypass and go straight over at the Scilly Isles junction with the A307 (2.1 miles), then take first exit to the A307 towards Esher and Cobham to the Between Streets Junction (4.5 miles)
  • At the junction of the A307 Portsmouth Road take the second exit to the A245 and head towards Painshill Junction and join the A3 north (0.6 miles).

M25 travelling westbound (towards Heathrow), to continue south on the A3:

If you're travelling westbound on the M25 and want to leave the M25 and join the A3 to travel south:

  • Exit at junction 9 (Leatherhead) taking the first exit and follow the A24 Leatherhead Bypass heading south on to the Givons Grove junction with the A246 (3.6 miles)
  • At the Givons Grove roundabout junction with the A246 take the second exit to the A246 Leatherhead Road toward Guildford to the Clandon Crossroads (8.5 miles)
  • At the Clandon Crossroads take the right turn to the A247 Clandon Road and then take the A3 South at the Send Junction (2.1 miles).

A3 travelling southbound (towards Guildford), to continue east on M25:

If you're travelling southbound on the A3 and want to continue your journey East on the M25:

  • Leave the A3 at the Painshill junction and continue on the A245 towards Painshill to the Between Streets junction with the A307 (0.6 miles)
  • Take the first exit to the A307 towards Esher to the Scilly Isles Junction with the A309 Kingston Bypass (4.5 miles),
  • Then take the second exit onto the A309 Kingston Bypass up to the A3 Hook Junction (Approximately 2.1 miles).
  • At Hook Junction take the second exit to the A243 towards Hook and Malden Rushett and Join the M25 at Junction 9 (5.3 miles).

A3 travelling southbound (towards Guildford), to continue west on M25:

If you're travelling southbound on the A3 and want to continue your journey west on the M25:

  • Leave the A3 at the Painshill junction and follow the A245 through Byfleet, West Byfleet and Sheerwater towards the Six Crossroads Roundabout junction with the A320 Woking (5.7 miles),
  • Take the fifth exit to the A320 which will take you to Junction 11 of the M25 (3.6 miles).

A3 travelling northbound (towards London), to continue west on M25:

If you're travelling northbound on the A3 and want to continue your journey west on the M25:

  • Exit the A3 at Send and join the B2215, at the roundabout take the first exit to the A247 Send Barns Lane, to the roundabout junction with B382 High Street Old Woking (2.1 miles),
  • Taking the second exit to the B382 High Street continue onto the B382 Old Woking Road and continue to the roundabout junction with the A245 (2.9 miles),
  • Taking the first exit to the A245 Sheerwater Road continuing on the A245 to the Six Crossroads Roundabout junction with the A320 taking the 5th exit to the A320 Chertsey road (1.8 miles), then continuing on the A320 the M25 J11 to join the M25 west (3.6 miles).
