These are the 10 most jaw-dropping TV moments of 2016… so how many do you remember?

From brutal deaths to amazing reality TV antics, these are the scenes that got everyone talking this year

BY now it's pretty obvious 2016 has been quite the year for news.

It's also been a pretty big one when it comes to TV - after all, who would have thought we'd ever seen the time come that the BBC lost the rights to The Great British Bake Off?

At least we had Candice and her pout to help us get over the shock.

We're only just recovering from the stress of this year's The Missing too... and suffice it to say, a DIY drill is never going to look quite the same again.

Those are two moments you aren't likely to have forgotten in a hurry, but they are just a drop in the telly ocean. Here are 10 of the most astonishing scenes to hit screens this year, how many did you catch? Beware, the below is stuffed with spoilers.

Those snakes

It only happened a few weeks ago, so it's unlikely you'll have forgotten this one.

But not TV moments list would be complete without this stunning Planet Earth II scene, which saw baby iguanas hatching and trying to make it across a valley on Fernandina Island.

It might sound fine, but what until you see what slithers across the sand towards them.

Kylie's demise in Coronation Street

Kylie Platt, played by Paula Lane, died in the arms of her hubby David in July after being stabbed to death by Clayton.

Viewers were stunned by the harrowing scenes, made all the more emotional thanks to David's devastated reaction.

All isn't lost though... it seems 2017 could be all about her explosive return.

Emmerdale's upped the ante with James Barton's death

First there was the soap's horror smash, then viewers were left dangling as it seemed either James, Aaron Dingle or Rhona Goskirk might lose their life.

Although his family begged him to keep fighting, it seemed being kidnapped, drugged, pushed off a bridge, landing on a car, and being crashed into was too much for James.

The character, played by Bill Ward, passed away.

The Walking Dead came out all guns blazing

This was quite the opener, with show newcomer Negan, played by Jeffrey Dean Morgan, proving he's a force to be reckoned with.

To fans' horror, he killed series favourite Glenn by caving his skull in with his barbed-wired bat Lucille.

Although it'd always been known that the character was going to cause problems, fans flocked to Twitter afterwards to vent their devastation.

That Orange Is The New Black ending

The Netflix prison drama is best known for its raunchy humour, but series four took things in a very different direction.

Poussey

Fan favourite Poussey died in Orange is the New Black, in a scene which was a total surprise

It dealt with issues including rape, bullying and prison overcrowding.

But it was the death of fan favourite Poussey (Samira Wiley) which really hit home - she died as an inexperienced officer struggled during a peaceful protest.

Poldark's 'rape' scene

There was a furore over the sequence, which was aired in October.

Anti-rape campaigners had hit out after Elizabeth says ‘No’ three times to Ross’s forceful advances – before he beds her.

She is then shown looking contented and many viewers agreed with Sarah Green, of End Violence Against Women Coalition, who slammed “irresponsible” producers for “minimising” the gravity of rape by portraying the scene as consensual sex.

Happy Valley's violent death

The BBC show is best known for Sarah Lancashire's portrayal of tough cop Catherine Cawood, but she wasn't at the centre of the most dramatic sequence this time around.

It was Alison who stole this season of Happy Valley, when she brutally killed her son Daryl

That went to farmer Alison (Susan Lynch), who found out her beloved son Daryl (Robert Emms) had brutally killed several women.

As he sat at the table eating a breakfast she'd loving made him, viewers were horrified to see her load a gun.

Although the shot wasn't seen it was definitely heard, making it all the more powerful.

Christopher Biggins booted off Celebrity Big Brother

Biggins was one of the big favourites going into the house, which made his sudden removal all the more astonishing.

It transpired he'd made a Nazi joke which upset his fellow housemate Katie Waissel, with the actor later begging her for forgiveness.

Zara Holland has sex on Love Island

In what was the most talked about moment of the series this summer, Miss Great Britain Zara romped with Alex Bowen.

It was caught on camera and was all viewers could talk about, meaning it also caught the attention of pageant bosses.

Zara was stripped of her crown due to the incident, which she suggested was an over reaction.

Top Gear and the Cenotaph

The launch of the new Top Gear, starring Chris Evans and Matt Le Blanc, had to be one of the biggest bits of telly news this year.

Top Gear returned to screens, but stunts like this one at a famous war memorial didn't go down well

One stunt didn't get quite the reception the team were hoping for though, when rally driver Ken
Block and Matt were seen filming wheel spins near the Cenotaph war memorial on
Whitehall.

Of course that wasn't the only thing which caused a storm - Chris vomited out of a car after a speed lap on the show.
