H&M customer shares snap of herself trying on trousers that don’t fit and blasts shop for its ‘unrealistically small’ sizes

Woman asks the store if she is too fat for their everyday range

A SHOPPER has slammed H&M for selling "unrealistically small" clothing in a Facebook post that has racked up more than 66,000 likes.

Ruth Clemens posted a photo of herself in the fitting room half-wearing the tight size 16 jeans which she is unable to fasten and points out that she normally fits into size 14 trousers and medium tops.

She also highlights that the biggest clothes the store sells are size 16, aside from the plus-size range.

In the Facebook message, Ruth wrote: "I'm normally a size 14 on my hips (occasionally 16 if buying trousers) so I thought I'd try them on. It did not go well.

"I am not overweight (not that that should matter) and although I'm 5 foot 11 my body is pretty average shape-wise.

It's already difficult enough for me to find clothes that fit well because of my height, why are you making jeans that are unrealistically small?

"Am I too fat for your everyday range? Should I just accept that accessible and affordable high street and on-trend fashion isn't for people like me?"

She added: "You might recognise the top I'm wearing - it's one of yours and it's a size medium. Sort it out would you. #whatdoesplussizeevenmean #bodypositive #fashionforall."

H&M has a size guide online and advises that a medium is equivalent to a UK size 14-16 for a waist that measures a minimum of 29 inches.

Meanwhile, a large is linked to a waist measuring from 32 inches, and is allegedly suitable for UK sizes 18-20.

In comparison, Marks & Spencer say their size 14 will fit waists measuring 31-and-three-quarter inches, while a size 16 is for 34 inches and a size 18 should fit a 36-and-three-quarters waist.

H&M replied to Ruth's post:"We are sorry to hear about your experience in store recently.

"We always want our customers to have an enjoyable time when shopping in store and to leave feeling confident in themselves.

"At H&M we make clothing for all our stores around the world, so the sizing can vary depending on the style, cut and fabric.

"We value all feedback and will take on board the points you and other customers have raised."

Scores of people commented on Ruth's post in agreement of the misleading sizes.

More than 2,000 people liked one of the comments, with one writing: "Unbelievable!!! It comes as no shock that many people including children/teens have low self esteem when it comes to their body. Will H&M sort this out?? I highly doubt it, and that is the upsetting thing!!! Fantastic that you have posted this."

While another commenter, Courtney Burgess, received over 1,000 likes on her comment: "This so rediculously true!! I am typically a size 12 and some of the size 16 clothing didn't even fit me. I am never shopping there again because I will not be made to feel bigger than what I am!"
