A RISKY decor trend has gone viral for how simple it is, but it could cause more harm than good.

A paint expert offered insight into an interior design activity that is likely to cause a furniture fatality.

Thanks to social media, the number of people who deem themselves professional sofa painters is seemingly on the rise.

Managing Director Michael Rolland shared why this trend should be avoided.

“DIY sofa painting is all the rage on Tiktok with viral videos showing a fun, simple, eco-friendly, and affordable way of redesigning your furniture," he said.

According to him, the only notable thing about sofa painting is that it’s "easy to make huge mistakes which could lead to unnecessary costs.”

He added that people expect their painted sofa to look like real quality pieces, but that's not the reality when you do it at home without professional experience.

Even if you use high-quality fabric paint, it is unlikely it will cover wear, tear, or imperfections and is even less likely to feel like a brand-new piece of furniture.

A sofa is normally very expensive and easy to ruin and this is "pretty inevitable without experience or expertise.”

On top of that, Rolland said that it’s much more difficult to stop paint from going dry, uneven, and crusty than Tiktokers show in their videos.

HANDLE WITH CAUTION

DIY online trends should always be tackled with caution because they are usually not from a legitimate source.

Rolland explained that because many TikTok videos are short and sweet, they usually don't give DIY overs enough information.

He called this "unnerving" because there are parts of sofa painting that could have a bad result without the correct guidance.

That is exactly who he thinks it could be seen as more of a "practice makes perfect" trend

ALTERNATIVE METHODS

Rolland also explained some alternatives to couch painting which may be more effective.

He doesn’t encourage the sofa-painting trend but is all for giving furniture a new lease on life.

He shared simple and cost-effective options that won’t end in ruin.

If you're into the arts and crafts DIY life, he suggested sewing removable covers for your couch as there is much less room for a disaster here.

If you’re not as handy with a needle, purchasing or thrifting a slipcover.

Also, investing in some quality cushions can do an old couch "huge favors."

"Paint shouldn’t be your first call here,” he declared.
