Aston Merrygold on partying with James Corden and why he doesn’t care that people think he’s a show-off

JLS singer Aston Merrygold, 33, was a finalist on ITV’s The Masked Singer.
He also stars in CBBC’s new series Almost Never.
What scares you?
Not raising kind, polite young boys [Aston has sons Grayson, three, and Macaulay, 10 months, with fiancée Sarah Richards, 37]. It’s scary to think they’ll be 10, let alone 21. Please be nice and kind all your life!
What is your worst habit?
It used to be overthinking, but now it’s sweets. Lately I’ve got a bit more of a sweet tooth.
How will you remember 2020?
As the year my second son was born. It’s been a good year for us as a family. We’ve got so many more family videos and photos because we were constantly together.
What’s your greatest achievement?
Before JLS started on our X Factor journey, we had a goals list. We had stuff on there like: perform with Mariah Carey, have a No.1 single, collaborate with the Jackson family, do a gig in front of a billion people – and a lot of it came true.
What’s at the top of your bucket list?
To be the lead in a blockbuster film filled with stunts, fight scenes and dramatic deaths.
Who is your celebrity crush?
Scarlett Johansson, just because she plays Black Widow. It’s a brilliant outfit.
Who or what is the love of your life?
I have to say Sarah. I can’t choose between her and the boys, but if it wasn’t for Sarah, the rest wouldn’t have happened.
I was always that person who said: “I’m never getting married and I don’t really want kids.” Then I was like: “I’m going to move you in,” and I proposed. It felt completely natural.
Who makes you laugh the most?
Our son Grayson. The stuff three year olds come out with…
What are your best and worst qualities?
They’re the same – my confidence. I’ve been on stage before and been told I’m “such a show-off”. That’s the point! Some people find me hard to take, but this is why I love my 30s, because I don’t care. I’m not here for a long time, I’m here for a good time.
Most famous person in your phone?
James Corden – we worked together once and it fuelled a good few nights out. He always sings old R&B songs. Once, we were singing Boyz II Men in the back of a cab, dropping James off at his house, and then he was singing in the middle of the street. He’s wild!
What’s your earliest memory?
Falling down the stairs when I was five. I was always running around and I tried to run like there weren’t any stairs. Luckily there were no injuries. I was bouncy!
What possession would you rescue from a burning building?
My laptop, because it’s got all my music on it, stuff from years ago that’s not anywhere else. I really need to put it on a hard drive.
What’s the worst pain you’ve ever felt?
Your first heartbreak is always hard. I was about 16 – I’m not going to say her name – and she broke it off with me.
I was like: “It’s never going to be the same!” And then I was fine.

Which public figure do you most admire?
Will Smith. He’s still so relevant and smart in his 50s, but having the most fun.
