You helped my friend when she was caring for her husband

DEAR DEIDRE: My best friend is a full-time carer for her husband and has really struggled so I wrote to you for advice.
We’re both 60 and have been pals for 40 years. Her husband is 65 and has severe physical and mental health problems. As it isn’t safe to leave him, her only social life was going to the corner shop.
He’s also abusive. She’s miserable and exhausted but I live 100 miles away, so it’s really hard to help.
You reassured me that my concern and friendship were of value, even if I couldn’t help practically.
You sent me your Help For Carers and Abusive Partners support packs to pass on to her.
And you told me to encourage her to talk to her GP about the impact this was having on her.
I’m pleased to say that things have improved.
She has arranged to get carers in, so she can go out occasionally.
She even got some respite care for her husband and came up to stay with me for a weekend.
Her mood is a lot brighter. Thank you for your advice.
