Speaking about he prepared for the Oscar nominated film, and how he took on the challenge of mastering the accent, Dev said: “To change the way I sound, that took a good eight months.

“It was eight months of solid repetition [and] I watched a lot of Australian Masterchef!”

It didn’t stick in Dev’s brain for long however, and the actor admits he was happy when he could start using his own accent again.

He added: “It went from my brain as soon as it was done...

“After eight solid months of repetition I was glad to say goodbye to it.

“It was torture, it's a very hard accent to grapple with.”

Speaking after he won his BAFTA, Dev said: “It's a lot to take in. I really did not expect to win.

“We have been going to all these awards and this one is where everything changed, on home turf with my family here.

“I used to watch this at home with my family and now for us all to be here, it's kind of an out of body experience.”

Joking about his breakthrough role in Skins, over a decade ago, Dev laughed: “Anwar would be off his face by now.

“I love those guys and my biggest inspirations were some of those characters from skins.

“Joe Dempsey inspired me and was a great mentor in that process. He sent me a lovely email to say can you believe it was ten years ago.”

Dev starred alongside Nicole Kidman in the film – which is up for seven Oscars later this month.

The actress stole the show in her plunging black gown.

Although fashionistas loved her designer dress Nicole later admitted her children probably wouldn't agree with how revealing it was.

Both Dev and Nicole have been nominated for Oscars for their roles in the movie, but Dev admits he already feels like a winner.

He added: “I have to pinch myself all the time.

From the beginning of this experience I've been surrounded by such amazing, superior beings.

“You have to constantly pinch yourself but it's all been so positive and for them to actually acknowledge your work is quite mind blowing.”

Nicole wasn't the only celebrity who dared to bare on the night, with Emma Stone and Sophie Turner also flashing the flesh.

Kate Middleton stole the show with a jaw-dropping Alexander McQueen dress.
