The Crown and Thistle perfectly balances history with cosy luxury in the picturesque Oxfordshire market town of Abingdon.
Originally built in 1605 as a coaching inn, the wisteria clad bolt-holt recently had a £1.8 million renovation.
The hotel now offers rooms with a boutique vibe and all the creature comforts you could ask for.
But the inn still retains its centuries-old character and personality: think beams, roaring fires, wonky windows and uneven oak floors sitting harmoniously alongside swish bathrooms, unlimited wifi, coffee machines and air-con.

There are walks a-plenty in easy reach, either in the surrounding countryside and nearby Cotswolds, or more locally in the picturesque Abingdon Lock, which boasts a weir and watercourse first built by monks in the 10th century to power their mills.

With friendly service, a great menu and fully Covid-secure premises there’s no reason not to stay put.
There’s a restaurant for smarter dining which serves lots of delicious local produce.
Enjoy chicken, beef or lamb cooked on the josper charcoal grill, a traditional Sunday roast or, for a more relaxed option, enjoy a genuine Neapolitan pizza cooked in the woodfired oven with the flour, tomato sauce and mozzarella all sourced from Naples.
The delicious breakfasts also deserve a special mention, with funky menu choices such as sausage or bacon brioche bun or chorizo hash as well as an amazing full English.

There are 18 well-decorated rooms at The Crown and Thistle, all brimming with charm.
Set around a cobbled courtyard, the rooms are in a separate building to the main restaurant and pub.
The rooms are all named after famous former Oxford residents, and have a flat-screen TV, ipod dock, mini-bar, and tea and coffee facilities.
The en-suite bathrooms are beautifully done with fluffy towels, nice smellies, power showers and some have roll-tops baths.
