UNAI EMERY has opened the door for Reiss Nelson to return to Arsenal in January following his stunning start to the season on loan at Hoffenheim.

Nelson - who is tied down in North London until 2022 - has banged in five goals in six Bundesliga games, with his strike against Bayer Leverkusen last week a goal of the season contender.

Ahead of Arsenal's Europa League clash against Sporting Lisbon, Emery said: "He can take responsibility, minutes and confidence in a team where he can play more.

"Then the objective with him is to come back with us and grow with this experience.

"My experience in Spain and France is that with this loan the player can take this.

"With Reiss, we are very happy with him at the moment. We follow him every match. We are thinking how he can help us in the future."

And when pressed whether there was a chance for Nelson to return to the club in the winter transfer window, Emery refused to rule it out.

He added: "At the moment we don’t speak about that.”

Nelson - who featured 16 times for Arsenal in all competitions last campaign - recently spoke of his desire to break into the Premier League side's staring XI.

He said: "I’m just here to play my football in Germany.

“Hopefully I’ll come back in a couple of months – if it’s a year so be it – ready to play in Arsenal’s first team."

Nelson will be looking to carry on his purple patch in front of goal when Hoffenheim entertain Augsburg on Saturday.

While Arsenal will be hoping to get back to winning ways in the top-flight following consecutive draws when they welcome Wolves to the Emirates on Sunday.
