LIVERPOOL could reignite their interest in Borussia Dortmund defender Neven Subotic.

The Serbian centre-back, 27, is desperate to leave the Bundesliga after a frustrating season spent mostly on the sidelines under new manager Thomas Tuchel.

Liverpool, now managed by Subotic's mentor Jurgen Klopp, have previously been linked with the 6ft 3in defender.

Klopp is also known to be seeking defensive reinforcements - although no kind of offer or discussions have taken place.

His agent, Frieder Gramm, says Subotic wants regular football again.

He told German magazine Kicker: "Currently it does not look like he will get more game time in the upcoming season.

"But he absolutely wants to play, and does not want to earn his money on the bench."

Gramm added in Der Westen: "We are currently scouting the market."

Subotic started just 10 games under Tuchel last season, the new manager preferring Sokratis Papastathopoulos alongside the now departed Mats Hummels.

Subotic rose to prominence under Klopp.

The German manager had managed Subotic at Mainz and made him one of his first signings when he moved to Dortmund in 2008.

Subotic was a key player in the teams that won the Bundesliga in 2011, the double in 2012 and which reached the Champions League final in 2013.

Klopp is believed to be chasing an upgrade at centre-back, where he got inconsistent play from Dejan Lovren, Martin Skrtel and Kolo Toure, who has now left the club.

Manchester United have also been linked with Subotic in the past, while new manager Jose Mourinho is known to prefer physical defenders.

However, the Portuguese has already overseen the £30million arrival of Eric Bailly from Villarreal and could look at other positions that need strengthening.
