report a short-term extension to cover the end of the delayed Premier League season has yet to be agreed.

The English top-flight returns on June 17 after Covid-19 stopped play in March and the Gunners travel to Manchester City.

Arsenal stumped up £1million to secure the 28-year-old on loan and are understood be paying his £65,000 a week wages.

But despite being signed to cover Hector Bellerin at right-back, Soares arrived already crocked.

He had a knee injury which was thought to only keep him out for a matter of weeks but he still had not made his debut by the time the league was halted in March.

He's now recovered from the knee issue but a freak facial injury picked up in training has kept him out of the behind closed doors friendlies.

The Gunners thrashed Charlton 6-0 at the Emirates before suffering a 3-2 loss to Brentford at the same venue on Wednesday as preparations step up for Project Restart.

Soares has been spotted wearing a mask since he copped a ball in the face and suffered swelling on his nose and around the eye.

Even if a deal can be done before the June 23 deadline, Soares could choose to follow the example of Bournemouth's Ryan Fraser and opt not to play games for the fear of injury ahead of becoming a free agent.
